What Is Your Alexa Ranking?

By Jennifer Provencio

According to Wikipedia, Alexa Internet Inc. is a California based subsidiary of Amazon.com and is known for its toolbar and website. What Alexa is, is a listing of websites that are on the internet that are tracked by traffic. The lower the Alexa ranking number, the more heavily visited that site is.

Here is an example of some popular sites. Google is number 1, Yahoo is number 4, Facebook is number 2, and Twitter is number 9. Now your site may never be able to compete with these. However, you should have a clear understanding of how Alexa rankings work.

If you do not have the Alexa Toolbar installed, then go to the Alexa website and download it. The toolbar is simple to install. Once you have it installed there will be an Alexa button on your browser's toolbar. All you have to do is click on that button to get a site's ranking. The advantages of installing this on your browser is that every time you visit your own site it will increase your rankings.

This Alexa toolbar does not work with all browsers. So data is really limited to the people who are using the most popular browsers like Firefox and Chrome. Data is also limited by the fact that its only tracking traffic from people who have the toolbar installed.

So you need to ask yourself if this is important to you. You can measure your Google Page Rank, but this is much harder to do as they only rank pages 1 through 10. With Alexa, the really cool thing is it will tell you your ranking even if you are 25,000,000. When I first started blogging, that was my ranking. After three weeks of daily blogging it was in the 5,000,000 range.

You can increase your Alexa ranking by adding the Alexa widget to your blog. This will track the visitors to you site and report it to Alexa, helping your rank.

If you want to generate leads for your site and get more visitors, then you need to get a better Alexa rank. If you are anything like me, you are probably wondering what a good Alexa ranking is, right? Many people say that it should be below 100,000. My opinion is, you need to beat your competition. So find out what rank they are and aim to get more traffic then they have. To check out your rank and the rank of others, simply Google "My Alexa Ranking" and you will see many sites where you can check this.
