A Brief Overview Of Denver Activities

By Mavis Roach

If you've grown bored with your hometown, you must not live in the Mile High City. Colorado's capital is overflowing with features and attractions. An exhaustive listing of Denver activities would fill multiple books, but this list contains a few highlights to pique the interest of a first-time visitor.

A Denver omelet is the perfect way to start your day. Ham, cheese, onions and peppers inside an egg blanket will fortify you for a day of sunny sightseeing. This city has on average 300 days of sunshine a year.

Stroll on Sixteenth Street - or ride its free bus - to the steps of the Capitol, crowned with a dome sheathed in two hundred ounces of pure gold. Find the marking on the Capitol steps that is exactly one mile above sea level. Next door, you'll find the Colorado History Museum with exhibits about the state's founding and the gold miners who founded it.

Arts enthusiasts love visiting the Denver Performing Arts Complex or The Plex. The Lincoln Center in New York City is the only performance center in the world larger than The Plex. Its ten venues include a ballroom, a concert hall, seven theatres and an opera house. Everyone can find something they like there.

Those who prefer sports to symphonies should check out the Mile High City's professional sports teams. There are eight of them. They include Major League Soccer's Rapids; Major League Lacrosse's Outlaws; National Basketball Association's Nuggets; National Hockey League's Avalanche; Major League Baseball's Rockies; National Football League's Broncos; Arena Football League's Crush; and National Lacrosse League's Mammoth.

Any one of the many restaurants at Larimer Square is sure to please even the most discerning palate. After lunch or before dinner, you can shop in the Victorian block's boutiques and galleries. You won't want to miss the Square's stunning sunset views.

The fun in this town doesn't stop after dark. In fact, it just gets better. Practice your arpeggios and then visit the Wild Ivories Dueling Piano Saloon. This dueling piano bar encourages audience participation. The improvisational music and comedy show will have you laughing into the wee hours of the Mile High morning.

It is not possible to be bored in the Mile High City. This city has more parks and brews more beer than any other U. S. City. It boasts one of the largest rodeos in the world. You can even witness money being made at the Treasury Department's Mint. As you can imagine, these suggestions do not begin to scratch the surface of the many Denver activities available to visitors.
