Historic, Beautiful St Augustine Inns

By Sarah Wilson

A variety of St Augustine Inns are located in this historic Florida city. It was founded by Spanish explorer, Pedro Menendez de Aviles on August 28, 1565, the feast day honoring Augustine of Hippo. This town is the oldest continually occupied city and port on the continental United States. The city offers many fascinating attractions.

Spain ceded Florida to the U. S. Government in 1819. It became an official territory of the United States in 1822. Its military government was headed by Andrew Jackson, who would later become a U. S. President. The territory was officially admitted to the union as a state in 1845.

The town is characterized by Spanish colonial structures and 19th century architecture. St. George Street is the city's historical anchor. Many of the buildings date back hundreds of years. While some buildings have been restored, others are the original structures.

Avero House, situated on St. George Street, is also known as the Minorcan Chapel. It recognizes the earliest Greek emigrants who began arriving in the area in 1768. A museum is located in the complex.

The national monument at Fort Matanzas encompasses 100 acres of barrier islands and salt marshes, as well as a Spanish fort dating to 1740. The fort was constructed from a regional shell-stone material known as coquina. The sides are 50 feet long, and it's guarded by a 30-foot tower.

Fort Mose Historic State Park is where the first free black settlement was located. The Spanish-sponsored asylum for British slaves was officially recognized in 1693. Spain's condition for granting freedom was conversion to Catholicism and four years of service to the crown.

The country's oldest wooden school is located near the gate to the city, on St. George Street. The site dates to 1716. Red cedar and bald cypress, iron spikes and wooden pins were used in its construction.

St Augustine Inns offer comfortable settings from which to base explorations of this historic city. The beautiful weather, relaxed lifestyle and many historic attractions make it a top tourist destination.
