Time to Knit with Free Patterns for American Girl Dolls!

By Mary Ann Walsh

Many of us are already feeling anxiety over budgets that need serious trimming and at the same time we are facing holidays and special occasions of gift giving for our children. It's not an easy time as we make lists and try to cut corners on the presents we need to purchase, constantly worrying whether we can be economical and still delight our children on those occasions that we traditionally celebrate with a gift.

Maybe now more than ever, it is time to consider decreasing this kind of stress in our lives, and there are plenty of good reasons for such an endeavor, as we all know from reading about heart disease and how it is fueled by stress! But our hearts also tell us that we want to have the perfect gift for our daughters, granddaughters, nieces and little friends. Most likely they have an American Girl doll or a similar type of 18" doll that can always use clothing. We may already have bought our share of doll clothing and not have realized that there is a less expensive alternative knitting clothes for those American Girl (or 18") dolls. Why not?

Are you crazy? We can hear you screaming at us already! So you don't have a creative atom in your body? So you don't have ten minutes for a morning cup of coffee let alone the time to sit and knit like your great grandmother? Whoa! Sit back down, and please calm yourself. Give us a moment.

Okay, perhaps you don't know how to knit, but you can learn. A run to the library will score you a free rental on a child's book of knitting. Yes you heard that right - a child's book which is going to be easier than an adult book! You can begin with something simple like a tiny square blanket. The needles are relatively inexpensive and will last forever. You can also consider an evening class at your local high school or community college. Trust us: knitting is alive and well!

Another issue to consider have you ever watched women who knit? If you have, we suspect you've loved the peaceful energy they give to their surroundings. Knitting is a very soothing hobby and worthy of note: it promotes heart health as well!

Is it possible? Do we have you convinced that even if you have never knitted a loop in your life, this is something you'd like to try? Terrific! Now let's seriously contemplate the benefits of knitting: it will de-stress you, it will help your budget, and it will give you a sense of personal and creative accomplishment that cannot be compared to much else in this world.
