Some of Finest Ways to Treat Kidney Stones

By Julianne Marks

When you have kidney stones, you obviously want to find the most effective treatment to get rid of them. If you have large kidney stones, your doctor may recommend certain medical procedures but if they are small, there are many effective home treatments that work well. Let's take a closer look at some of the available options for treating your kidney stones at home. Combining several approaches can be effective but you need to be careful mixing drugs and herbs, so always check with your doctor to make sure the combination is safe.

Certain medical procedures can be performed if your kidney stones are extremely large or painful. One type of surgery is ureteroscopy in which a thin tube is inserted into the urinary tract so the kidney stones can be broken up or removed. Another option available to you is ESWL which uses shock waves to break up the kidney stones. When the stones are too large to be removed any other way, open surgery may be recommended. For this operation, your surgeon will make an incision in your side so they can remove the stone.

When you have kidney stones, another healthy fruit you can eat is watermelon. You can simply eat the fruit or make it into a juice and drink it. It can also be helpful for you to drink pure apple juice. Finally, lemons are very healthy for the kidneys. Try having a slice of lemon in your water or make a natural lemonade but don't use too much sugar.

These substances are normally harmless but some experts believe they should be avoided if you have kidney stones because they can bind to calcium which is what most kidney stones are formed from. If you want to eat a low oxalate diet, you should look for a complete list of foods that are high in oxalates, but some of the most common include spinach, parsley, strawberries, blueberries, wheat bran, wheat germ, peanuts, almonds, cashews and chocolate.

Since most kidney stones are formed from calcium, it's commonly assumed that you should eat a diet low in calcium to treat or prevent kidney stones. Recent research suggests that this is not really the case. Evidence shows you have a better chance of avoiding kidney stones if you get enough calcium. This is because your body produces more oxalate when you don't get enough calcium, and this contributes to the formation of kidney stones. But this doesn't mean you should drink lots of milk if you have kidney stones. You should also limit your animal protein intake when you have this problem. However, you should make sure you get your body's daily requirement of calcium.

If you haven't exercised recently, start by taking regular walks and build up to more strenuous exercise as you feel better. Everything from natural remedies to medical procedures can be used to treat kidney stones. There's no one simple cure for kidney stones, though the single best remedy is probably drinking plenty of water. If you make an effort to eat a healthy diet, avoid foods that can contribute to the problem, and get regular exercise, you can get rid of kidney stones quickly and prevent them from returning.
