Is it cost effective to build your own small business websites?

By Sarah Johnson

Before we get started, take a moment to ask yourself these questions. Firstly, what is the work situation that you are in? and secondly, what is the site for?

Learning to build a basic business website isn't rocket science, if it were then I am reasonably sure that there would be a lot more rocket scientists around and a lot less web designers. This isn't intended to demean web designers (I am one myself).

Nearly anyone who has the aptitude to learn and in particular those that pick up systems rapidly can learn to design their own site and this is a description that generally fits the kind of person that owns their own business. A lot of time learning about design fundamentals, CSS, HTML needs to be spent, then putting this new knowledge together as a website. So before jumping in, you need to ask yourself Do you have the time to learn these skills?

You may well have had enough of working for someone else and are glad to put in the hours necessary to gain knowledge of the basics. If this is your situation then you could have the time on your hands to learn the fundamentals, purchase some domain hosting and get started on your business site.

You could, however be considering this option from a completely different situation. You may already own or run a business and struggle to find the time to carry out your normal workload. If this is your situation then building your own business website is not going to do you, your business or your family life and favours.

You also ought to ask yourself what the website that you are hoping to create is for. To answer this you ought to look at the level your your business.

Are you a sole trader such as an electrician or a cleaner that just needs to set up a web presence so that people in your local area looking online for your type of services can find your contact details and pick up the telephone? If this suits your sort of business then a very basic website is probably sufficient for your needs and it is realistic that you can achieve this by building your website yourself.

If your business falls in to what is deemed to be a more professional kind of business such as accounting or a training provider then a basic looking site might not give an impression of your business that you want potential clients to view. If this is the case then it may make better business sense to get a professional web design company to build the kind of website that you require to gain that extra business.
