Using Fibreglass as a Material for Garage Doors

By Larry Blickly

Of all the four materials used to make garage doors, fiber glass is the least well known and least used. Like all materials that are used for garage doors, fiberglass as a material has advantages and disadvantages over its counterparts. If you happen to be shopping around for a garage door, consider looking at fiber glass garage doors as they are very cheap.

Fiberglass door do not need to look ugly, and can easily be made to look like wood to the untrained eye. The imitation wood finish is very desirable, as it adds class and style to an otherwise, mundane object that is rather drab if left unpainted. Compared to the cost of wood, fiber glass is a lot cheaper and it will not rot, nor will it house termites, and neither will it be prone to the capricious effects of weather.

Another advantage of fiberglass as a material for garage doors is its insulating properties. Fiberglass used to be used in lift insulation as well as in many other situations around the home, and it therefore makes sense to choose a material for your door that already has insulating properties. Aside from insulation, which can help you cut down on your utility bills, fiber glass is lighter than wood, aluminum or metal, making it easier for you to manually open and close a garage door.

A major disadvantage of fiber glass is its short life span. Fiberglass will begin to look old very quickly and is also prone to cracking, making your doors look old before their time. You will generally find that the guarantee you get with your fiberglass garage door will be much less than with a steel or aluminum door.

The really dismal property of fiber glass is that you cannot prolong its life span by repainting or applying chemical treatments. You can check over your doors regularly, but they will still be prone to cracking. Fiberglass is however exceptional in situations where you live in coastal areas as it is not affected by the sea air. Fiberglass is used a lot in the production of boats and canoes, so you can see that if you live by the coast, then fiberglass maybe the best option for your garage door after all.
