How Stun Gun Voltage Affects the Human Body

By George Harrison

A stun gun is a non-lethal electronic security device that produces a high voltage shock. Even with just a touch, it can immobilize a person for several minutes - without causing any permanent damage.

But how does a stun gun work? Stun gun voltage affects an attacker's muscles at a pulse frequency rate which causes the muscles to do work rapidly. The muscle's rapid work instantaneously exhausts the person's blood sugar level as it converts to lactic acid. The voltage basically prevents the body from producing energy for the muscles, rendering the attacker too immobilized to function.

Stun gun voltage usually ranges from 100,000 to 300,000 volts and delivers up to 3 amperes (amps) to the body. Once stunned with this voltage, an attacker can either feel a sharp pain or collapse in a heap and unable to move for about 15 minutes. The amount of voltage may sound like life-threatening but actually, it is pretty much harmless to the body. There is only temporary discomfort as the amperage of the charge controls the strength. The 3 amps delivered by the stun gun are enough to halt an attacker without causing him serious damage.

Contrary to what most people believe, stun gun voltage doesn't have to be applied to the head or neck area of an attacker to be effective. This is because the general nervous system is already doing its job of connecting the brain and the body. Once the stun gun is applied to any part of the body, the nerves serve as conduits that let the impulse travels to the brain. A person's body mass and physiology, though, affect the effectiveness of a stun gun. For instance, an attacker who weighs 250 pounds or more would make the stun gun work extra as there's an additional distance the current needs to travel to the brain.

If you find it necessary to carry a device for self-defense purposes yet wary of causing lethal damage to another person, then a stun gun is perfect for you. As mentioned, stun gun voltage temporarily scrambles the body's neurotransmitters. This makes it difficult for the muscles to perform their functions properly. You don't have to suffer any anxiety as no internal organs are damaged in the process, not even the brain. The basic idea in using a stun gun is to leave an attacker stunned long enough to allow you to get away and run for safety.
